Fragrance Land of Ancient Age: PHASELIS
The most famous coastal town of ancient age was Phaselis, which was joined to Rome by Brutus in 42 B.C., and it was becoming a diocese during the Byzantium period. The Rhodians set up Phaselis as a port city in 693 B.C. Shipping trade was the most important source of income in the city. First of all, water requirements had been supplied with well and cistern in Phaselis. After that, water had been brought from a springhead, which was located in the north of the town, to the hill behind of Hadrianus Agora via aqueduct. And then, from there, it had been distributed to the town via canals and cement water pipes.
The major ancient ruins of town are partially standing on the main road, which connects the naval port to southern port. The road with 125 meters long and 20-25 meters width has pavement with three stairs on both sides of it. There is a square on the middle of the main road, and it reaches to southern port. Sewage and drainage system is underlaid in the beautiful cladding stone road.
Phaselis ancient city has three port. In addition to this, Columnar port road, which links middle and south port to each other, and a theater, back of a small hill on the sea side of road, Gate of Hadrian, which built to memory of Hadrianus during his visit, a Roman bath, agora, aqueduct and acropolis on the hill are some of the worth seeing ruins of the ancient city.
Nowadays, local and foreign tourist can spend whole day in Phaselis thanks to its beautiful coast mingled with history and culture. In history, Phaselis is known as a ‘perfume storage’ because of its various vegetation.
Phaselis’ center and surroundings are filled with pine tree, so it is cool even in hot summer days. Thus, you can walk around easily the ancient city and enjoy the nature.
