Uzbekistan marks Press and Media Employees Day
Every year on June 27, Uzbekistan marks Press and Media Day. Over 1,500 media organizations and more than 10,000 journalists operate in the country.
For many years, Uzbekistan has been criticized by the European Union, the United Nations and many Human rights organizations and international media organizations for restricting media freedom.
Shevket Mirziyoyev, who was elected the new President of Uzbekistan in the presidential elections held on December 4, 2016 after the death of the first President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Islam Kerimov, has made many reforms in the country, mainly political, economic and social. June 27th as Uzbekistan's Press and Media Day is approaching, the extent to which these reforms in the country will affect the freedom of the press is a matter of debate in the social media.
