Meke Lake dries out
Lake Meke, known as the "evil eye talisman of the world" in the Karapinar district of Konya, completely dried out.
Chamber of Geological Engineers Konya Branch President Prof. Dr. Fetullah Arik stated that the cause of the aridity the increasing drought and over-consumption of the aquifers.
It is believed that it is difficult for the lake to return to its former form as Meke lake formed as a result of a volcanic explosion and water filled in to crater. Because of longstanding drought and unconscious agricultural irrigation, Lake Meke was completely evaporated.
Geologist Arık said that along with Meke, many wetlands in Konya are facing this danger, as Konya could no longer be fed by the underground waters. For this reason, he noted that measures should be taken all over the Konya basin.
